Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Robert J Schmid:
Father Robert J Schmid was recently included on a Diocese of Camden list of priests who were named as being “credibly accused” of child sex abuse. Other than his assignments and the year of his ordination, the Diocese of Camden did not provide any information about the number of allegations against Schmid or the nature of the misconduct alleged.
According to Bishop Sullivan, the list, “includes those who admitted to the abuse, those who were found guilty after a trial in the church courts or the civil courts, and others against whom the evidence was so overwhelming as to be virtually unquestionable.”
Schmid left the Diocese of Camden in 1978. It is unknown if his departure after a very short tenure as a priest is related to allegations of sexual abuse, but it certainly is a red flag that he spent more time in seminary preparing to become a priest than he actually spent working as one.
Schmid’s current whereabouts are unknown and there is no public record of his death available. If he is still living, he is approximately 72 years old.
