Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Charles Hudson:

Father Charles Hudson’s name first appeared publicly on the Archdiocese of Newark’s list of accused priests published in February 2019.  Almost no information on the allegations against each priest, including age/gender of the victims, or the priest’s assignment at the time of the alleged abuse was disclosed.  However, in the case of each priest on the list, “the Archdiocese of Newark received information concerning possible misconduct by the individual, investigated the matter for corroborating evidence and determined that the report was credible. Accordingly, while those individuals may deny having engaged in illegal behavior involving a minor and they are entitled to be presumed innocent in a criminal court of law, the Archdiocese has determined that the information it received was credible and it has thus included their names on this disclosure.”

According to the list, Father Hudson of the Archdiocese of Newark was credibly accused of the sexual abuse of one child.

In January 1997, Father Hudson died.  According to his obituary, it was the morning after he received Drew University’s Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian of the Year Award. He had also been asked to be the Grand Marshal of first ever Union County’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade that year, but died before the event.

Elizabeth’s School No. 25 was named after him a month after his death, according to a bio of Hudson on the Center for Hope Hospice website, but the Elizabeth Board of Education and Administration has since renamed the school. He was also inducted into the Elizabeth Hall of Fame after his death.
