Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Jim Weiner:

Father Jim Weiner was ordained a priest in 1989 and served in the Archdiocese of Newark. He served in multiple parishes throughout his career. According to media reports, in August 2018, he took a leave of absence amid a renewed sexual misconduct investigation. In a sexual misconduct probe, priests said that Father Weiner “had a reputation among the clergy, dating back to his time in the seminary, for active homosexuality.” Cardinal Tobin told clergy in his diocese not to speak to the press after the news report detailing allegations of sexual misconduct appeared on Catholic News Agency (CNA).

According to CNA, it was all part of a subculture that existed while former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick was the archdiocese’s archbishop, as well as under his successor, Archbishop John Meyers, six anonymous priests said in independent interviews.

One priest alleged that Father Weiner sexually abused him while they were classmates at a seminarian in Newark in the late 1980s. Now with the Diocese of Albany, the victim said he agreed to a $35,000 settlement in 2004 that covered the cost of counseling after the Archdiocese of Newark’s Review Board deemed the claims credible.

Cardinal Tobin said Father Weiner’s case had been examined by a review board in 2003 “even though it did not involve an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor”. He said he had ordered a new investigation in July 2018 due to “new information and out of an abundance of caution in these most difficult times.” The internal investigation remains open.

It is unclear if Weiner has ever been accused of sexually abusing a minor child, or if the investigation is limited to allegations that he engaged in sexual misconduct with adult males only.

In February 2019, Father Weiner’s name was not included on the Archdiocese of Newark’s list of  priests credibly accused of sexually abusing minors.
