Fr. Joseph Girdis

Diocese of Pittsburgh

Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Fr. Joseph Girdis:

Father Joseph Girdis was ordained to the priesthood and served in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. According to media reports, in August 2019, he was one of two priests named in a civil lawsuit filed against the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The lawsuit claims that Fr. Girdis and Fr. Larry Smith repeatedly sexually abused a 12-year-old boy while he was living at the Holy Family Institute in Emsworth, Pennsylvania, in the 1970s.

Fr. Girdis died in 2003. Neither he nor Smith were identified in the 2018 Grand Jury Report, and neither priest appears on the Diocese of Pittsburgh’s list of accused priests.
