Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Harold Hermley:

Fr. Harold Hermley was a priest of the Oblate of St. Francis de Sales religious order. According to the lawsuit, in 1967 he was removed from his position as a teacher from Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, Virginia after possible child sexual abuse allegations surfaced. He was transferred to Wilmington, Delaware.

In April 2009, a man filed a civil lawsuit alleging that Hermley sexually abused him more than 100 times starting at age 15, between 1971 and 1973. The alleged abuse occurred while he was a student at Salesianum School in Wilmington, Delaware, and during overnight visits to New Jersey and Philadelphia.

In August 2011, the Oblates reached a $24.8 million settlement after seven years of legal proceedings with 40 victims who filed suits under the Delaware Child Victim’s act. According to media reports, one of the terms of the settlement was the release of names of 12 Oblate priests who have either admitted to sexual abuse or had allegations of sexual abuse substantiated against them. Hermley was on that list.

Hermley died in 1983.
