Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father James Gould:
Father James Gould was ordained a Jesuit priest ordained 1974 and served in the Archdiocese of Newark. According to media reports, in at least 2011, the order was made aware of allegations reported, of sexual abuse of a minor boy in the late 1970s. The information was included in a secret “black binder” of allegations given to Bishop Richard J. Malone when he was named bishop. Father Gould admitted to abusing the minor and has been removed from ministry.
In November 2018, Father Gould’s name was included in the Diocese of Buffalo’s updated list of priests with substantiated claims of sexual abuse of a minor. The original list was published in March 2018 and includes priests only if they have more than one allegation. No details about where the abuse occurred or what it entailed were released. His name also appeared on the Jesuit Northeast Province’s list of Jesuits with credible allegations of sexual abuse of minors published in January 2019. In August 2019, a lawsuit was filed under the NY Child Victims Act alleging that Father Gould molested a 13-year-old boy in the mid-1970s at St. Ann’s Church in Buffalo.
