Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Father Daniel Babis:

Fr. Daniel Babis worked for several parishes in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. According to media reports, in January 2006, Fr. Babis was named in a lawsuit alleging that he sexually abused five brothers and sisters from the early 1950s through 1968. When the father was suffering from an ulcer and in and out of the hospital, the priest became a surrogate father to the family. The alleged abuse included fondling and photographing his naked victims. It occurred in the children’s home, in church buildings, motels, including a home for retired nuns, and on overnight trips.

“He sexually abused me and took photographs of me,” a victim said. “I also witnessed my brother being abused. “I always pretended to be sleeping. He always came to me in the night. Then he would finish with me and go to my brother. I would look at Father Babis’ feet as he kneeled next to my brother’s cot and . . . ” she said, trailing off.

Father Daniel G. Babis was transferred from one parish to another within the Diocese of Rockville Centre and ended up in Florida in 1970. He died there in 1978.

Since the suit was filed, at least four others have alleged child sexual abuse during the 1960s at Our Lady of Peace in Lynbrook, New York. The victims included two brothers and a sister in one family and a nine-year-old girl fondled in the rectory.
