Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Gerald McGrath:

Father Gerald McGrath was ordained to the priesthood in 1958, and served in the Diocese of Ogdensburg. He also worked at multiple parishes in Gouverneur, Brownville, Lyon Mountain, Malone, Evans Mills and North Bangor. After a leave of absence, in 1978, Father McGrath was incardinated in to the Archdiocese of Miami, where he continued to serve.

According to media reports, in November 2018, the Diocese of Ogdensburg released a list of 28 priests who were credibly accused of sexual misconduct with a minor or a vulnerable adult. The number of alleged victims or the time frame that the alleged abuse occurred was not disclosed. The list noted that Father McGrath died in July 2016 at the age of age 90.

Diocesan officials had previously said they would not release the names, largely to protect the privacy of victims. Each name on the list has been internally investigated and the Diocesan Review Board found that the allegations were credible.

In August 2019, Father McGrath was named in a lawsuit filed under the NY Child Victims Act alleging that he repeatedly sexually abused a minor. The Child Victims Act provides necessary relief to child victims of sexual abuse by amending New York’s antiquated laws to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions, regardless of when the crime occurred.
