Father Walter Fernando was ordained a priest in 1973 in Sri Lanka. He was incardinated in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 1986. The alleged survivor came forward in 2002. Her allegations were investigated by police, but Father Fernando was allowed to continue working around children for nearly two years until 2004 when he was placed on leave.
