Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Rafael Escala:

Fr. Rafael Escala was ordained in Cuba in 1957.

Escala was expelled after the Castro Revolution. He spent some time in the Dominican Republic and ended up in the Miami area in 1977.

In 2011, a man notified the Archdiocese of Miami that he had been abused by Escala in the late 1980s when he was a 16-year-old altar boy at St. Timothy Catholic Church in West Kendall, Florida. Escala caught him stealing $60 from the collection plate and he threatened to tell the boy’s father but abused him instead.

In January of 2013, the claim was settled but was not published until several months later when the plaintiff made it public. This is the first allegation against the priest.

Escala died in 2009.
