Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Joseph Arevalo:
Father Joseph Arevalo was ordained a priest in 1965. He was from the Philippines, and a member of the order of Discalced Carmelites. He was assigned to multiple parishes in the Diocese of Rockville Centre from about 1977. Father Joseph Arevalo retired in 2014, and has since been in residence at the Church of Saint Joseph in Babylon.
According to media reports, in June 2019, an allegation of child sexual abuse by Father Joseph Arevalo was reported to the Diocese through the Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program (IRCP) of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. The report alleged that the priest repeatedly sexually abused an 8-year-old girl over a three year period from 1992-1995, while he was assigned to St. Hugh of Lincoln in Huntington Station. A lawsuit was filed in February 2020.
“In April 2021 the official committee of abuse survivors in the Diocese’s bankruptcy identified Father Arevalo as a person accused of abuse who has some connection to the Rockville Centre Diocese.” According to the committee, the people on this list, “…have been accused of committing sexual abuse. These people have served within the territorial limits of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. A religious order and/or diocese outside of the Diocese of Rockville Centre found sexual abuse accusations against these people to be credible or sexual abuse lawsuits have been filed against these people.”
