Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Br. Barnabus Stelzner:

Br. Barnabus Stelzner was a Benedictine monk who served in the Diocese of Pueblo. According to media reports, sometime in the early 1980s, he allegedly sexually abused a minor child while he worked at the Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City, Colorado. In 1997, he and several others at the abbey were named in a lawsuit alleging that they repeatedly sexually and physically abused a 15-year-old boy while he attended the boys’ boarding school at Holy Cross Abbey from 1982 to 1983.

Br. Stelzner was reportedly still assigned to the abbey, but working in Kansas. The school closed in 1985, although monks continue to live there. Abbey officials have denied that they knew of or condoned physical or sexual abuse of students. The Diocese of Pueblo said it had no jurisdiction over the abbey.
Even though it lies within the diocese, the abbey belongs to a religious order and operates independently of diocesan control.

Br. Stelzner’s current whereabouts and whether he has access to children are unknown.
