Summary of Abuse Allegations against Monsignor Malcolm Strassel:
Monsignor Malcolm Strassel was ordained a priest in 1934, and served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. According to media reports, in 2009, he was accused in a lawsuit of fondling the genitals of a boy while assigned to Our Lady of Lourdes in Uptown New Orleans between 1969 and 1971. The plaintiff’s attorney alleged the statute of limitations had not lapsed in the case because the traumatized victim suppressed the memory of the abuse and the church had worked to cover it up. The Archdiocese settled the lawsuit.
Monsignor Strassel died in May 1987. In November 2018, his name appeared publicly on the Archdiocese of New Orleans’ list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. It noted an allegation was received in 2006. His name was also included on the diocese of Baton Rouge’s list in early 2019.
