Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father James Pulskamp:

Father James Pulskamp worked in various parishes within the Diocese of Santa Rosa. Beginning in 1977, Fr. Pulskamp ran the Hanna Boys Center, a school and residential treatment center for vulnerable children, and then spent many years as pastor in Santa Rosa.

In 2012, Bishop Robert Vasa announced the appointment of 22 new pastors and their assistants at parishes throughout the Santa Rosa Diocese, shaking things up in Northern California with no explanations. Fr. James Pulskamp was among them, as he was told he was being transferred from St. Eugene’s to Star of the Valley. Pulskamp commented that was a sign to “slow down.”

In 2020, California lifted the statute of limitations for civil claims against private institutions for sexual abuse of minors by its employees. As a result of the three-year “lookback” window that allows new child sex abuse lawsuits based on formerly barred claims, Fr. Pulskamp was named and accused by at least one victim. His accuser alleges that Pulskamp sexually abused him during his time at the Hanna Boys Center in the 1970s, the school he ran for 15 years.

Pulskamp did not respond to NBC Bay Area’s request for comment, but according to media reports, investigators claim that despite hundreds of new Northern California legal filings against four Bay Area priests as of June 2022, the diocese’s internal review board did not substantiate the claims against Pulskamp. Bishop Vasa stated that Pulskamp remains in ministry after an internal review board recommended no action be taken against the priest unless new details emerge in the investigation. Vasa stated that he finds it difficult to give the allegation any credence given the priest’s stellar reputation over the past 50 years. Currently, Pulskamp serves as the pastor of Star of the Valley Catholic Church and is listed as a Regent Emeritus on the Hanna Boys Center’s website.

So far, more than 200 lawsuits have been filed in Northern California accusing priests or church employees of abuse. Other new names will likely emerge by the three-year lookback window that closes on Dec. 31, 2022.
