Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Father Robert B. Cullen
Fr. Robert B. Cullen was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1958 and worked in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. In 2019, Fr. Cullen was listed on the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of Minors list. In April 2023, Maryland’s Attorney General released a report alleging 156 Catholic clergy members sexually abused at least 600 children over six decades. The report lists the names of the abusers, including Fr. Cullen.
According to the AG’s report, in the 1960s, the mother of a victim reported to the Maryland Province of Jesuits that her daughter had been sexually abused by Fr. Robert Cullen when she was between 8 and 14 years old. She also told her brother, a Jesuit priest, and Father Allen Novotny. Both men acknowledged receiving the report, but no action was taken to notify authorities, identify additional victims, or restrict Cullen’s access to children.
In 2005, the victim herself reported to the Jesuits about Cullen’s sexual abuse. The Jesuits made the mandated report. The abuse occurred at the victim’s family’s home in Baltimore County, and according to the victim, her mother caught Cullen “in the act.” The Jesuits have reported that there were multiple victims of Cullen during his time at Loyola Blakefield but have not provided details.
Cullen was listed as credibly accused by the Archdiocese in 2019. In 2019, the Maryland Province of Jesuits included Cullen on its list of “Jesuits with an allegation of an offense against a minor (anyone under the age of 18) that could not be fully investigated to determine credibility, but for which there is a reasonable possibility (a semblance of truth) that the alleged offense occurred.”
Fr. Cullen died in 2005.
