In 1889, the Dwight School for Girls was founded as a college preparatory school for females. Later, The Englewood School for Boys was established in 1928 for male students. In 1973, the two schools formed a nonprofit corporation known as Dwight-Englewood School. The schools consolidated again in 1993, and now includes students from Pre-K to sixth grade as well. It is home to a population of about 900 students and 100 classroom teachers annually.
In 2014, allegations of a former music teacher at Horace Mann School in The Bronx, New York were brought to light in a lawsuit filed by a former Horace Mann student. The lawsuit accused teacher Johannes Somary of "grooming" and subsequently abusing multiple students in what later became a massive scandal at Horace Mann. The first victim claimed the sexual abuse occurred over many years, and that some of the incidents took place while the Glee Club was traveling to and performing at the Dwight-Englewood School on multiple occasions. The lawsuit claims that the schools knew that Somary was a predator for many years and did nothing about it. The case was settled in April of 2015.
