Sexual Abuse Allegations at The Delbarton School

Morris Township, New Jersey

Morris Township, New Jersey

Founded: 1939

Location: Main campus in Morristown, New Jersey

Grades: 7 through 12

Delbarton is an all-male Roman Catholic preparatory school operated by the Benedictine Monks of St. Mary's Abbey. The school was established in 1939 and in the beginning, it was only home to those in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. In 1942, the school expanded and began educating boys from seventh to twelfth grade. In recent years, its enrollment has averaged at almost 600 students per year.

According to documents filed in Superior Court in Morristown, a former headmaster and several monks (both current and retired) were accused of sexually abusing several boys from 1968 to 1984.   In early June 2018, the Benedictine order settled multiple lawsuits brought by five men who were former students at Delbarton. As of July 2018, almost 30 victims have stepped forward with claims of abuse.

One priest, Timothy Brennan, was accused in three of the settled cases and five more pending complaints. Since then, he has admitted to abusing over 50 boys over the years and that he has been living in a notorious pedophile treatment center in Missouri.

The school's former headmaster, Luke Travers, had complaints made against him by two brothers who alleged the abuse occurred when Travers was still a teacher at Delbarton. One of the brothers also named Rev. Justin Capato as another abuser at the Delbarton School. The two cases were both settled in March of 2018.
