Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Father Daniel Casey:
According to media reports, in October 1992, two families filed lawsuits against the Diocese of Syracuse alleging that Father Daniel Casey abused three boys in the late 1980s.
Casey was director of religious education at St. Paul's Elementary School and associate pastor at St. Paul's Church in Oswego at the time of the alleged abuse. The victims were boys between the ages of 10 and 12 years old. Casey denied all the accusations, but soon after, Casey was sent to a Maryland treatment center for dysfunctional priests.
According to the court documents, Casey was accused of "speaking words of sexual endearment" to the boys, touching and kissing them, disrobing them, and making the boys remove their clothes in a shower room area while on a recreational outing to a local college. One mother claimed Father Casey went further than that with her son, who she said had attempted suicide and been treated for alcohol and drug abuse as a result of being molested.
As an adult, years later the victim said, "Father Casey would take me in various places over 100 times. He would take advantage of me, and take advantage of our situation alone together. Sometimes, in front of people. He violated me in ways that no child should ever be violated. It's hard to talk about. It really is."
Father Casey was also sued in Georgia in 1996. The two aforementioned families settled for nearly half a million dollars in 1998.
In February 2018, Father Casey was publicly accused of sexual abuse of another 5th-6th grade boy at St. Paul's in Oswego in the 1980s. His name appears on the Diocese of Syracuse's list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors, published in December 2018.
