Summary of Abuse Allegations against Brother John Chaney:

Brother John Chaney was a member of the Congregation of Christian Brothers religious order who served in the Archdiocese of Newark. He arrived at Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, New Jersey in 1965. He was appointed as the Junior Guidance Director and continued to work there until 1978. According to media reports, while in this position, he allegedly sexually abused at least three children. He was later transferred to All Hallows High School in the Bronx, in the 1980s where he allegedly sexually abused at least one child.

In January 2014, one alleged victim recalled, "If you went for extra help after school in Spanish he would call you to his desk and put one hand on your ass and the other on your penis and squeeze it and say, 'Now give me the answer!'" In June 2014, his name was included on the Congregation of Christian Brothers' list of clergy credibly accused of child sexual abuse.

May 2017, Brother Chaney's name was listed on the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers' list as accused by at least two people in claims settled in bankruptcy proceedings. In October 2014, his name was included on a list of accused clerics named in civil claims resulting in settlements after a settlement had been reached in the previous year.

According to the 2014 Official Catholic Directory Brother Chaney was living at a Christian Brothers residence in West Park, in the Archdiocese of New York. His current whereabouts are unknown.
