Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Juan Bazalar:
In 1991, Fr. Juan Bazalar was indicted for sexually abusing a 15-year-old altar boy in the late 1980s while serving at St. Peter's Church in Monticello, New York. The boy claimed Bazalar fondled him on four occasions at church and sodomized him in the parish's sunroom.
According to media reports, after his indictment, Bazalar fled to Canada. He was arrested and extradited to the United States in 1993 and convicted. Bazalar was sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison, but his conviction was overturned on an appeal. At a second trial, Bazalar was found not guilty after the prosecution's key witness died. The survivor reportedly did not want to go through a third trial.
Bazalar returned to his native, Peru, and reportedly resumed his career as a priest. No other details have been released.
