Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Monsignor Ronald Sciera:

In 2021, Monsignor Ronald Sciera of the Diocese of Buffalo was named in confidential documents containing information about sexual abuse allegations when a lawsuit was filed through the federal bankruptcy court as part of its chapter 11 reorganization proceeding. According to media reports, Fr. Sciera allegedly sexually abused a 13-year-old in 1972 while assigned to St. Aloysius in Cheektowaga as the assistant Pastor. Sciera denied the accusation and claimed he had a friendship with Pope John Paul II. Sciera was placed on administrative leave in September 2021 pending investigation.

After learning about these claims, the diocese notified the appropriate District Attorneys and reported them to the Independent Review Board. In February 2023, the review board substantiated the allegations and deemed them credible. Sciera is retired and residing in Florida. Sciera is now among 86 priests on a list of Buffalo Diocese clergy with substantiated claims of abuse against them, as determined by the diocese. In addition, 23 religious order priests who had served in the Buffalo Diocese have been identified as having substantiated abuse claims.
