New Deadline for Diocese of Rockville Centre Sexual Abuse Claims

| Feb 14, 2018 | Firm News

The Diocese of Rockville Centre has extended its deadline to March 31, 2018 for persons who were sexually abused by its clergy to apply for compensation with its Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program.  This new deadline is only for the Phase One of the program, which is for people who previously filed complaints with the Diocese.  Phase Two, which opened on February 1, 2018 is scheduled to end on April 30, 2018.  Phase Two is for claimaints who have not previously filed complaints with the Diocese.

This is the second occasion that the Diocese of Rockville Centre extended the deadline for Phase One participatents.  The program was publicly announced in October 2017,  with an initial deadline of December 31, 2017  for Phase One claimants. That deadline was pushed back in mid-December to Jan. 31, 2017.  The deadlines have been extended again because some abuse victims needed extra time to complete the application, a process that involves reliving painful memories and in some case gathering documents to substantiate the claim or resulting damages.

According to the Diocese of Rockville Centre, 181 people were designated by the Diocese as eligible for Phase One.  Out of the 181 people, 126 have submitted claims.
