Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father George Farrell
Father George Farrell was ordained a priest in 1996 and served in the Diocese of Metuchen. He served in multiple parishes throughout his career. According to media reports, Father George Farrell was among several clergy whose cases were investigated by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and not charged in 2003.
Farrell took a voluntary leave of absence from ministry after allegations were made that he engaged in “inappropriate communications” over the Internet with a minor child. No additional details about the alleged misconduct were made public, except that they did not involve any allegations that Farrell touched a child in an inappropriate manner. No criminal charges were filed but the case was referred to the state Division of Youth and Family Services. DYFS declined to pursue the matter as it took the position it had no jurisdiction over the matter.
Farrell was reinstated as assistant pastor at St. Matthew the Apostle Church in Edison, New Jersey shortly thereafter without restriction, according to the Diocese of Metuchen’s spokesperson. The Diocese of Metuchen is no longer publishing his assignments on its website, but he is believed to be in active ministry and assigned to St. Joseph in Plainfield, New Jersey.
