Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Patrick Kuffner:
Father Patrick Kuffner taught in the Catholic Church school system for nearly 30 years before he was ordained a priest in 2002 and served in the Diocese of Metuchen. According to media reports, in 2018, three people accused him of sexual abuse while they were minors. The charges date back more than 30 years, while Kuffner was teaching on Staten Island. All three victims were men who claimed that Kuffner had been molesting them while he was a layman and basketball coach for the school. Three law enforcement agencies were initially involved in the allegations, and two of them determined that the statute of limitations had expired on his crimes; one investigation is ongoing.
Kuffner was put on a leave of absence during the time of the investigation and initial letter sent out by the Diocese of Metuchen in February 2018. A year later, in February 2019, the Diocese of Metuchen stated the internal investigation is still open.
In November 2019, Kuffner was arrested and charged with three counts of sexually abusing a teenage boy. In a statement released after his arrest, the Diocese of Metuchen said that the incidents took place in Massachusetts more than 35 years ago, and before Kuffner was a seminarian or ordained as a priest.
