Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Phillip Matthews:
Father Phillip Matthews was recently included on the Diocese of Camden list of priests who were named as being “credibly accused” of child sex abuse. In 2016, Matthews was included on a list of accused clerics named in civil claims resulting in settlements or arbitration awards. He allegedly abused a 10-year-old boy in 1966 at an Atlantic City hotel, while he assigned to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Berlin, NJ. The claim was settled back in 2015. Matthews also worked in Laurel Springs and Margate parishes in the Diocese of Camden. Matthews is also identified as an alleged perpetrator in other civil lawsuits and bankruptcy claims.
According to Bishop Sullivan, the list, “includes those who admitted to the abuse, those who were found guilty after a trial in the church courts or the civil courts, and others against whom the evidence was so overwhelming as to be virtually unquestionable.”
Matthews went on leave in 1973 and appears not to have returned to ministry.
Matthews is now deceased.
