Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Fr. Stephen Garrity:

Fr. Stephen Garrity was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1970 who served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Scranton. According to media reports, in 2013, the Jesuits told the Philadelphia district attorney that they received a credible allegation that one of their priests, Father Stephen Garrity, had inappropriate physical contact with a student at St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in North Philadelphia in the 1970s.

The Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus said that Garrity, a graduate of the school, engaged in inappropriate sexual touching while teaching at the school from 1971 to 1979.

At the time, Garrity had already been removed from ministry in 2007 for admitting to inappropriate sexual contact with five adults between the ages of 18-23 in the early 1980s while he served in Baltimore and Philadelphia.

Fr. Garrity was subsequently sent to a monitored, residential treatment facility on the East Coast. He passed away in 2014.

In 2018, his name appeared on multiple dioceses lists of clergy credibly accused of child sexual abuse including the Diocese of Raleigh, the Jesuits Maryland Province, and the Diocese of Scranton List 12.22.18
