Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Monsignor Augustine Seidenberg:
According to a 1994 lawsuit, Father Augustine Seidenberg is alleged to have repeatedly assaulted five women, all sisters and/or cousins, when they were minors. According to the victims’ reports, Seidenberg would hold each girl on his lap, fondle her genitals, and masturbate as he heard each of their confessions at churches in the Diocese of Camden: St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church in Brigantine and Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church in Cape May.
In 1994, Seidenberg was permanently removed from the ministry. In 2003, there was a settlement amongst the women.
Seidenberg’s name appears on the February 2019 Diocese of Camden list of credibly accused priests. According to Bishop Sullivan, the list, “includes those who admitted to the abuse, those who were found guilty after a trial in the church courts or the civil courts, and others against whom the evidence was so overwhelming as to be virtually unquestionable.”
Seidenberg died in 2001.
