Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Father Florencio Peneda Tumang:

In 1993, four families of the Trenton Diocese filed a lawsuit against the Diocese of Trenton, St. Mary’s parish, several Diocesan officials, and Fr. Florencio Peneda Tumang, claiming that Tumang sexually abused four of their daughters. After the allegations became public, Tumang fled to the Philippines and never returned to the United States.

According to media reports, three of the four families claimed that they approached the Diocese in 1990 to report the molestation of their daughters. The Diocese did nothing, and the fourth girl was molested as a result, according to the lawsuit. According to court documents, the assaults occurred between the late 1980s and early 1990s. The girls were in their early teens at the time the abuse began.

Shortly after the families sued the church, Fr. Joseph LaForge allegedly gave Tumang $5,000 from a parish account to flee the country. LaForge was later indicted on charges of helping Tumang escape, and the charges were dismissed after he completed a pre-trial intervention program for first-time offenders.

Tumang’s name appears on the Diocese of Trenton’s list of credibly accused priests, published in February 2019. Tumang was reportedly incardinated into the Diocese of Trenton in March 1984 but worked in Diocese of Trenton parishes and schools prior to his incardination date.

Tumang is dead but was never formally removed from the priesthood before his death.
