Msgr. Thomas P. Barry – Archdiocese of Denver

Monsignor Thomas Barry

Archdiocese of Denver

Monsignor Thomas Barry

Ordained: 1939

Death: 2003

Assigned as follows:

  • 1955-1970: Annunciation Parish (Denver, CO)
  • 1970-1976: St. Joseph's Parish (Golden, CO)

Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Msgr. Thomas Barry:

Msgr. Thomas Barry was ordained a priest in 1939, and served in multiple parishes in the Archdiocese of Denver. According to media reports, he is the subject of at least one allegation of sexual abuse as a priest in the Archdiocese of Denver.

According to the Denver Post, in 2007, Barry was named in a lawsuit filed by a woman who previously reported her abuse to the Archdiocese in 2006.   The victim said she met Barry at a time when she was experiencing difficulties in her home. Barry offered her a place to live and while she was living there, Monsignor Barry sexually molested, exploited and abused her.

The allegation was discussed in greater detail in the October 2019 report published by the Colorado Attorney General's Office.  According to the report, the 2006 report was not the Archdiocese's first knowledge of the abuse.  Documents in Barry's personnel file indicate that the abuse was first reported to the Archdiocese of Denver in September 1973 by the victim's mother.  According to the AG's report, the Archdiocese "either failed to document or ignored [her] report allegation of child sex abuse," which was brought directly to the Archbishop of Denver.  "The Denver Archdiocese took no action against Barry and no steps to protect against future abuse."

Neither allegation was reported to law enforcement, including the one made in 2006.

Barry died in 2003 in Denver, Colorado.
