Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Robert Gibney:

Father Robert Gibney was ordained a priest in 1954 and served in the Archdiocese of Newark. According to media reports, while working at a parish in Vailsburg, New Jersey, he was accused in a lawsuit of sexually abusing a child from 1961-1963. The case was quietly settled in 2014 and included the names of two other priests who worked at Sacred Heart Parish and Seton Hall Prep School. All of the victims included in the lawsuit were between the ages of 11-14 when the abuse occurred.

In 1997, Father Gibney retired and moved to a residence for retired priests in Caldwell, New Jersey. Since then, a second man has come forward to accuse Father Gibney, only this time at St. Catherine’s in Cedar Grove.

Father Gibney’s name appears on the Archdiocese of Newark’s February 2019 list of credibly accused priests.  According to the Archdiocese, Father Gibney was the subject of “multiple” credible allegations but the Archdiocese has not released any details about the abuse.  For example, it has not disclosed the age/gender of his victims, nor his assignments at the time of the abuse.

Father Gibney died in 2012.
