Sexual Abuse Allegations at Seton Hall Preparatory School

Essex County, New Jersey

Founded:1856

Location: West Orange, New Jersey

Grades: 9 through 12

Founded in 1865, Seton Preparatory School is the oldest Catholic college prep school in New Jersey. It is an all-boys school that is under the supervision of the Archdiocese of Newark, with its origins on the campus of Seton Hall University. The Prep School now has an average enrollment of about 900 students and almost 80 classroom teachers.

In May 2017, a former member of Sacred Heart Parish who attended Seton Hall Preparatory School sued both institutions and the Archdiocese of Newark. The lawsuit claimed that the school failed to protect him from repeated sexual abuse by two priests in the 1970’s. The lawsuit named Fr. William Giblin as an alleged abuser; at the time he was the headmaster of the school. Giblin has also been charged in Canada in 2002 for soliciting sex from a minor.

Rev. Robert Gibney was the other priest who was named in the lawsuit against Seton Hall Prep.  Gibney also worked at Oratory Prep in Summit.

Records show William Giblin died in 2011.  Gibney died in 2012.
