Sexual Abuse Allegations at The Lawrenceville School

Mercer County, New Jersey

Founded: 1810

Location: Lawrenceville, New Jersey

Grades: 9 through 12

Founded in 1810, The Lawrenceville School was originally known as Mainhead Academy and had several variations of the name thereafter. It is now a coeducational preparatory boarding school for students from 9th to 12th grade. The school averages at about 800 students each year and around 100 classroom teachers.

After multiple allegations of sexual abuse in recent years, in 2018 the Lawrenceville School hired an outside investigative firm to look into the school’s history of alleged abuse. Bruce Presley, who was not only a teacher but also a housemaster at the school, has been the subject of dozens of sexual abuse and harassment complaints during his employment at The Lawrenceville School from 1960 to 1984. One of the most consistent stories of abuse was Presley making students do a series of exercises naked while Presley leered at them. The former students recall this happening as a form of punishment for rules infractions, such as being out past curfew.

Others complained of inappropriate physical touching as well.

Presley, now 79, is believed to be residing in South Florida.
