Br. Matthew Miles – Archdiocese of Washington

Brother Matthew Miles

Ordained: Unknown

Assigned as follows:

  • St. Joseph's Indian School (Chamberlain, South Dakota)

Summary of Abuse Allegations against Brother Matthew Miles:

According to media reports, in March 2008, Brother Matthew Miles admitted in a deposition that he was convicted of sodomizing young boys in Washington, D.C. He was removed from ministry and said he spent 20 years in a Sex Addicts Anonymous 12-step program.

Brother Miles, was transferred to Milwaukee and as of 2011, was still being presented by the Priests of the Sacred Heart publications as a cleric in good standing. This was a violation of the American Bishop's 2002 Dallas Charter for the Protection of Young People.

Brother Miles also admitted abusing at least one boy at St. Joseph's Indian School in Chamberlain, South Dakota. In June 2007, this man filed suit alleging Brother Miles and another staff member raped and sexually abused him in the 1970s from age 7-10 at the school.

The case went before the South Dakota Supreme Court. Due to the statute of limitations for plaintiff's action barred plaintiff's claims because plaintiff discovered or reasonably should have discovered The trial court granted defendants' motion for summary judgment, and plaintiff appealed.

The Supreme Court dismissed the case. It found that in accordance with the statute of limitations, it was undisputed that the plaintiff knew of the alleged abuse and that it caused him harm more than three years before he filed suit.
