Shaw had a very short tenure with the Diocese of Rochester. He was assigned to St. John the Evangelist in Clyde in 1973 briefly.  He then transferred to St. Margaret Mary in Irondequoit in 1974, where the alleged abuse occurred.

Shaw resigned from the ministry in 1977 and was dispensed from the clerical state (laicized) in 1978, thus ending his career in the priesthood.
