Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father John W Broderick:

Fr. John W Broderick was ordained a priest in 1989. He was assigned to parishes in the Diocese of Albany and Syracuse. According to media reports, in February 2008, Broderick was arrested and charged in August with sexually abusing three children between October 2005 and May 2007, in Nicholville, New York. The children were ages 5 to 11, and all from one family. The victims’ parents told investigators Broderick befriended his family and was considered their spiritual adviser.

Broderick was assigned to the Diocese of Syracuse. At the time of his arrest, he was staying at Holy Name of Jesus Academy in Massena, New York. In 2008, his privileges were removed by the Diocese of Syracuse for “incidents unrelated to sexual abuse.”  A spokeswoman said Church officials only learned of the allegations from media reports. Broderick said the incident was not sexual, nothing more than horseplay, and the accusations sprang from a vendetta against him by the father of the alleged victims. When the story broke, another family came forward and said their son was abused by Broderick a couple of years prior.

In November 2008, Broderick sued his accusers, alleging that the family made false statements about him. The suit was dismissed in January 2010.

In February 2009, he was acquitted on two felony charges and found guilty of one misdemeanor. In April, the court vacated his conviction.

In August 2018, Broderick’s name first appeared publicly on the Diocese of Scranton’s list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors, and in November 2018, Broderick’s name appeared on the Diocese of Albany’s list.
