Fr. Timothy Slevin – Archdiocese of Washington

Father Timothy Slevin

Ordained: 1965

Removed: 1974

Laicized: 1978

Assigned as follows:

  • Nativity Catholic Church (Washington, DC)

Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Timothy Slevin:

According to media reports, in 1972,  Father Timothy Slevin underwent treatment for fondling children connected with the Nativity Catholic Church in Washington, DC. He abandoned the priesthood in 1974 and was laicized in 1978.

In 1980, he was hired to coach the basketball team at Sacred Heart Catholic School. In August 1985, he was arrested for sexually abusing a fourth-grader at Sacred Heart Elementary School from 1983-1986. Court documents state that the incidents took place at Father Slevin's apartment, and that at times he paid the boy money. The boy's grades suffered and he became increasingly morose, the sentencing memo states, adding that the boy has enrolled in another school.

In April 1986, Father Slevin, pleaded guilty to four counts of sodomizing a minor and admitted to police he sexually abused six other boys more than 50 times in the past six years. The boys ranged in age from 10 to 16 when the incidents occurred. Charges relating to these acts were dropped in exchange for the guilty plea on four counts of abusing the other boy from 1983-1986.

In May 1986, Father Slevin was sentenced to three to twelve years in prison by a judge who said the man's actions had produced "incalculable harm."

"After reviewing everything, I've come down to the conclusion that this is not a case for probation," said Superior Court Judge Robert Mencher.

In December 1986, the mother of one of the boys sued the Archdiocese of Washington and Father Slevin for $200 million. The case was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.

In October 2018, Father Slevin's name appeared publicly on the Archdiocese of Washington's list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors.
