Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Saul Madrid:
According to media reports, in June 2003, a man filed a lawsuit accusing Father Saul Madrid of drugging and sexually abusing him when he was a minor in September 1987. At the time, Father Madrid worked at Saints Simon and Jude Cathedral in Phoenix, Arizona. The suit says officials of the Archdiocese used spiritual arguments and the victim’s devout faith to keep him from filing the lawsuit or reporting the abuse when it occurred.
In 1988, Father Madrid was sent to Servants of the Paraclete in Jemez Springs, New Mexico, a facility known for treating priests accused of child sexual abuse. He returned to ministry after treatment.
Father Madrid was sent for treatment to Paraclete center in 1988 and then was reassigned. Two years later in 2000, he resigned from ministry, citing health reasons.
The lawsuit was settled for $75,000 in 2006. Although he remains a priest, he was last known to be working in a medical office in Tempe, Arizona.
