Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Brother Howard Murphy:

Brother Howard Murphy was a Marist brother, teacher, and a guidance counselor at St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset, New York, in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. According to media reports, in April 2003, he was named in a lawsuit alleging that he sexually and psychologically abused a boy in 1984. The suit was filed on behalf of multiple accusers, and sought $500 million in compensatory damages and $1 billion in punitive damages.

The abuse allegedly occurred while the boy was on an overnight school trip to the Marist Brothers Retreat House in Wappingers Falls, New York. The suit claimed the priest unzipped the accuser’s sleeping bag and sodomized him.

Brother Murphy is believed to be working in school administration at Chapel School, a Catholic school in Sao Paulo, Brazil. His name is listed on the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s 2021 List of Clergy Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of a Minor.
