Father William Karvelis was ordained a priest in 1961. He worked in multiple parishes for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. His roles included Supervisor of the Deacon/Priest Internship Program, Priest Personnel Board member, and Pastor, St. John Nepomucene in Bohemia, New York.
According to media reports, in August 2019, Father Karvelis was accused in a lawsuit filed under the NY Child Victims Act of repeatedly sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy over a two year period from 1968 to 1970. The abuse allegedly occurred at St. Patricks in Bay Shore and on trips to Father Karvelis’ private home.
His name is listed on the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s 2021 List of Clergy Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of a Minor. The list states that allegations of sexual abuse occurred at St. John Nepomucene Church in Bohemia. Father Karvelis was assigned there in January 1980, and remained up until his death in July 1993 at the age of 58.
