Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Brother Al Behm:

Brother Al Behm served in multiple dioceses including the Diocese of Charlotte. According to media reports, in October 2019, the Ohio-based Glenmary Home Missioners released a list of clergy who were credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor or a vulnerable adult. The list includes five men (three priests and two religious brothers) that the Order says served in the Diocese of Charlotte.

Brother Behm was one of those men. He is also the only brother on the list who is still alive.  He is reportedly teaching Elementary English at the Phaung Daw Oo Integrated Monastic Education School in Burma/Myanmar.

According to the disclosure, Brother Behm left the order in 1993. The list was put together after a year-long investigation into the Glenmary Order. No specific information has been given related to the number of victims or the nature of the abuse. There is also no information provided as to where he was assigned when the alleged abuse occurred.

According to media reports, in July 2021, Behm was named in a civil lawsuit filed against the Glenmary Order and the Charlotte Diocese.  According to media reports, the plaintiff alleges that Behm sexually abused him over a period of years in the early 1980s when Behm was assigned to Western Carolina University.  The two first met when Behm was assigned in Connecticut; Behm remained close to the family after he relocated to North Carolina, according to the lawsuit.  The abuse began when the alleged victim was 16 or 17, and continued after the boy moved to North Carolina to attend WCU himself.

According to online sources, Behm has relocated to Myanmar, where he now teaches English to children.  According to their website, Phaung Daw Oo Integrated Monastic Education School “offers classes from kindergarten level through high school.”  The school is aware of Behm’s history of sexual abuse allegations is unknown. As of 2022, Behm has returned to Bangkok.
