Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Edward Smith:

Father Edward Smith was ordained a priest in 1943, and served in multiple parishes in the Diocese of Charlotte. According to media reports, in October 2019, the Ohio-based Glenmary Home Missioners publicly named Father Edward Smith on its list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors. Smith joined the order in 1943 and worked in many dioceses around the country. The Order says it received two credible allegations of sexual abuse after Smith’s death.

According to the Order, the first allegation was received in 1993.  The victim reproved that he was sexually abuse during the 1960s at Buck Creek, a training facility and summer youth camp. The other complaint involved abuse in 1963 when Smith was the pastor of St. Elizabeth’s in Boone, North Carolina.

In December 2014, the Charlotte diocese received a separate allegations against Smith from a man who reported he has been sexually abused in the 1960’s on Boy Scout camping trips in the Boone area. The allegation was also later deemed credible.

Smith’s name appears on the Diocese of Charlotte’s December 2019 list of credibly accused priests. He died in 1975 as a priest in good standing.
