Father Frederick George, a Benedictine monk, moved to a Richmond priory in 1975 from Belmont Abbey, where he had been briefly assigned to St. Michael Catholic Church in Gastonia.

According to media reports, in 1987, an allegation of child sexual abuse by Father George was reported. The alleged abuse occurred in the late 1970s at a Richmond parish. He was removed from ministry and sent for psychological evaluation. In 1991, he was cleared to return to Belmont Abbey, and in 1994 was made college chaplain. He left Belmont Abbey in 1998, and was permanently dismissed by the Vatican in 2004.
