Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Patrick Gavigan:

Father Patrick Gavigan was originally ordained for the Trappist Fathers religious order in Conyers, Georgia in 1953, and was into the Diocese of Charlotte in 1972 and retired in 1992. According to media reports, in April 2002, a woman alleged child sexual abuse by Father Gavigan in 1973, at Our Lady of Grace Church in Greensboro. The victim was a minor at the time of the alleged abuse.

After the allegation was received in 2002, the diocese alerted its Lay Review Board and Guilford County police department. Father Gavigan denied the allegation. In its investigation, the Lay Review Board recommended that Gavigan, living in a North Carolina nursing home by that time, be restricted from ministry to minors.

Gavigan's name appears on the Diocese of Charlotte's list of credibly accused priests, which means that the Diocese's internal review board ultimately determined that the allegation was more likely true than not.

He later died in 2007.
