Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Andrew Quillen (a/k/a Br. Mark L. Quillen):
Father Andrew Quillen (a/k/a Br. Mark L. Quillen) was a member of the Franciscan Brothers of Christ the King. In 1990, he was ordained for the Benedictines and changed his name to Father Andrew Quillen. He served in the Diocese of Burlington in Vermont for approximately 4 years.
According to media reports, in 1977, a man alleged that Brother Quillen and another religious brother sexually abused him when he was a minor seminary student while Quillen was a member of the Franciscan Brothers of Christ the King in Iowa.
“Even when I was being abused I was praying the Hail Mary, I’d be praying the Our Father that it would stop,” the man said.
He said he told Bishop O’Keefe in 1977, but no action was taken.
In 2001, Brother Quillen’s name appeared publicly on the Diocese of Davenport’s list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors. In 2003, the Benedictines sent him for treatment and then put him on a “safety plan.” He lived at Glastonbury Abbey in Hingham, Massachusetts, without faculties.
In August 2007, Brother Quillen’s name also appeared on the Diocese of Davenport’s Creditors Committee website, which lists clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors.
It also appeared on the Diocese of Davenport’s list in July 2008, noting one minor accuser and one adult accuser. In October 2018, the Diocese updated its list to include his new name, Father Andrew Quillen.
In August 2019, his name appeared as Mark L. Quillen on the Diocese of Burlington’s list of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors, Category B. During his four years in Vermont in the early 1990s, there were no accusations against him.
He currently lives at Glastonbury Abbey in Hingham, Massachusetts, and had his faculties to perform public ministry removed in the Archdiocese of Boston when the Archdiocese became aware of an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor in the Diocese of Davenport, Iowa, from the 1970’s.
