Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Protasio Soares:

Fr. Protasio Soares was ordained a Diocesan priest in the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman in India. According to media reports, in December 1997, a woman wrote a letter to the NY Times claiming that Soares, repeatedly sexually abused her in the late 1950s beginning when she was a 9-year-old girl. The alleged abuse occurred at St. Bartholomew’s in Elmhurst, New York where her parents were active members. She complained to the Diocese and to Cardinal O’Connor but no action was taken.

In October 2003, Soares was named as one of 24 abusive priests in a civil suit filed in Brooklyn, citing the same allegations. It is believed he is retired and living in Mysore, India.
