Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Gerard Kinane:
Father Gerard Kinane served at multiple parishes in multiple states throughout the southeastern part of the United States. According to media reports, in March 2004, a man alleged that Father Kinane had sexually abused him as a 14-year-old in 1973 and then again in 1975, when Father Kinane served as associate pastor at St. Mark’s in Chalmette.
He was removed from ministry shortly after an initial investigation. No criminal charges were filed because the statute of limitations had expired. Later that year, the Vatican ordered a church trial. Father Kinane insisted on his innocence and ultimately in 2005, filed a defamation lawsuit against the archdiocese. The suit was dismissed in 2010. He was eventually laicized, although the date is unknown.
In November 2018, Father Kinane’s name appeared publicly on the Archdiocese of New Orleans’ list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors. It noted an accusation of abuse in the 1970s and 1980s was first received in 1993.
In January 2019, his name appeared on the diocese of Houma-Thibodaux’s list of clergy credibly accused of child sex abuse. (Houma-Thibodaux, created in 1977, had been part of the Archdiocese of New Orleans.)
