Summary of Abuse Allegations Against Father John Padian:

Fr. John Padian was a Catholic priest and worked in the Diocese of Brooklyn and in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. In 2019, Fr. Padian was listed on the Diocese of Brooklyn’s list of clergy credibly accused of sex abuse of minors In 2020, Fr. Padian was listed on the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse of Minors list. In April 2023, Maryland’s Attorney General released a report alleging 156 Catholic clergy members sexually abused at least 600 children over six decades. The report lists the names of the abusers, including Father John Padian.

According to the Attorney General’s report, in 2007, a woman reported being sexually abused by Fr. Padian on numerous occasions, beginning in 1979 when the victim was approximately 12 years old. The victim met Fr. Padian as a toddler when Fr. Padian was attending St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore and was a close family friend. While assigned to the Diocese of Brooklyn, Fr. Padian would vacation in Baltimore, often staying at the victim’s family home. In approximately 1979, Fr. Padian stayed at the victim’s home and began to spend time alone with the victim, including driving her home from school, during which Fr. Padian would sexually abuse the victim. The victim tried on a new bathing suit to show her family, and when she sat down at the piano, Fr. Padian sat next to her and sexually abused her. Fr. Padian sexually abused the victim two more times during his stay. Sometime in 2018 or 2019, the Diocese of Brooklyn sent the victim an unsolicited check, according to the report.

Fr. Padian died in 1995.
