Father Charles Stephney

Ordained: 1980 or earlier

Assigned as follows:

  • 1980-1982: St. Mark's (Cincinnati, OH)
  • 1982-1984: Our Lady of the Presentation (Brooklyn, NY)
  • 1987: St. Teresa's (Washington, DC)
  • 1988-2020: Unknown

Summary of Abuse Allegations against Father Charles Stephney:

Fr. Charles Stephney was a priest of the Society of the Precious Blood. He was assigned to St. Mark's in Cincinnati, and also served as Chaplain at a Cincinnati jail. According to media reports, in late 1981, several boys accused him of making sexual advances and jail officials purportedly asked him to leave. The Society of the Precious Blood reportedly sent him for treatment in Brooklyn, and he was reassigned to a job without contact with children at Our Lady of the Presentation in Brooklyn.

In May 1987, against orders of the Society of the Precious Blood, he left for Baltimore, Maryland, and went to work in Washington D.C. for accused priest George Stallings. Stallings knew about the allegations made against his new assistant but told parishioners Stephney had left his Order to care for his mother. When Archbishop Hickey learned of the situation he ordered Stallings in October 1987 to fire Stephney. Stallings did not. In February 1988, Hickey again ordered that Stephney be fired.

In 1989, Stallings started his own, independent, church called "Imani Temple" in Washington D.C. In April 1990, Stephney worked there as his assistant. He was expelled from the Society of the Precious Blood.

His current whereabouts are unknown.
