Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Edward D. DeRussy:

Father Edward DeRussy was first publicly accused of sexual misconduct with a minor when the Jesuit Central and Southern Province released an updated list of credibly accused clergy members in December of 2018. The list states that there have been multiple allegations made against Edward DeRussy, all occurring sometime in the 1970’s.

According to the official Catholic Directory, DeRussy was assigned to New Orleans most of the 1970’s. More specifically, his assignment record shows that DeRussy taught at the Jesuit High School in New Orleans.

Edward DeRussy was restricted from ministry in 1991, and has been listed as deceased since 2001.

On April 8th, 2019, a man from the state of Washington filed a lawsuit against the New Orleans Archdiocese over previous undisclosed claims of sexual assault by Edward DeRussy at Jesuit High School in 1969. The man was only a teenager at the time of the alleged sexual abuse. The victim reported that he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression following the incidents with Father DeRussy.

In April of 2020, the Archdiocese of New Orleans filed for bankruptcy protection. As part of its bankruptcy, the Archdiocese of New Orleans will be reviewing and paying claims for anyone sexually abused by diocesan priests and lay employees. This will likely include claims filed on behalf of anyone whose case may be beyond the statute of limitations.
