Father Edwin Kennedy
Diocese of Ogdensburg
Summary of Sexual Abuse Allegations against Father Edwin Kennedy:
Father Edwin Kennedy was ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Ogdensburg in 1951. He served in multiple parishes throughout his career. According to media reports, in November 2018, his name was included on the Diocese of Ogdensburg’s list of 28 priests who were credibly accused of sexual misconduct with a minor or a vulnerable adult.
Details of the allegation, including the number of alleged victims or when and where the alleged misconduct occurred, are unknown. The list noted that Father Kennedy died in October 1990. Whether or not he was still active in the ministry is unknown.
Diocesan officials had previously said they would not release the names, largely to protect the privacy of victims. Each name on the list has been internally investigated and the Diocesan Review Board found that the allegations were credible.
In August 2019, Father Kennedy was named in a lawsuit filed under the NY Child Victims Act alleging that he repeatedly sexually abused a 17-year-old minor in 1966. The Child Victims Act provides necessary relief to child victims of sexual abuse by amending New York’s antiquated laws to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions, regardless of when the crime occurred.
